New Toyota Prius c officially launched – RM97,000 OTR!



UMW Toyota Motor launched the new Prius c in Sunway this evening. The Prius c, known as Aqua in Japan, is an all new hybrid model for the B-segment, meant to go head-to-head with the Honda Insight. It has been teased before, but we can now confirm that the price is indeed RM97,000 on the road including insurance.
This RM97k price is quite a bit lower from the initial RM104k price estimated by UMWT last month, and makes the Prius c look even better value against the RM99,812.15 Honda Insight, which is its main rival. Till now, the brisk selling Insight has been the most affordable hybrid car in Malaysia, and the only one priced below RM100k.

We understand that the lower final price vs the higher initial estimate wasn’t a deliberate “strategy” but a result of hard work till the very end on UMWT’s part. We have to agree that it’s a great price for what’s on offer.
The Prius c is powered by Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive “full hybrid” system, which here consists of a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor. The former is the 1NZ-FXE engine related to the one in the Vios. However, for this hybrid application, the VVT-i mill runs on an Atkinson cycle with a higher compression ratio (13.4:1) and unique valve open/close characteristics. It makes 73 PS and 111 Nm of torque.

The electric motor in question makes 61 PS and 169 Nm of torque, and the total system output is 101 PS. The motor is powered by a 144-volt nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery located under the rear seats (max output is 19.3 kW).
Other HSD components are the power control unit (inverter), a DC-DC converter, a step up converter and a hybrid control computer. The HSD system in the Prius c is 42 kg lighter than the HSD in the Prius, contributing to an overall low kerb weight of 1,140 kg.

Drive goes to the front wheels via a CVT gearbox. The Prius c rides on front McPherson struts and a rear torsion beam. Brakes consist of front ventilated discs and rear drums, the former providing energy regeneration to the battery. The steering system is EPS and the car rolls on 185/60 R15 alloys.
There are three selectable modes for the driver – Normal, ECO and EV. ECO reduces energy consumption by altering throttle response and air-con performance, because nothing comes for free! Go for EV mode and the car runs purely on batteries – this can be done at speeds of up to 45 km/h, and when you have sufficient charge, of course.

In the European combined cycle, the Prius c manages 25.6 km/l, which matches the Prius and is class leading. Toyota says that its 0-100 km/h of 10.7 seconds is also best in class.
Dimensions wise, the Prius c is smaller than the Honda Insight. Overall length for this standard shaped (no “signature hybrid look” here) five-door hatchback is below four metres, or 400 mm shorter than the Honda, but its 2,550 mm wheelbase matches the Insight. The width of both cars are identical as well.
Exterior aero reducing cues include the “pagoda” roof, “aerocorners” on the bumper, a flush underbody and aero stabilising fins around the car. The “under priority” trapezoidal front grille is designed for optimised aero/cooling.

Inside, the Prius c doesn’t have the Prius’ high centre console and tiny gear knob, but the dashboard is still interestingly styled. The Multi Info Display is a 3.5-inch full colour panel that shows everything from an Energy Monitor to an ECO Score. FC records are shown in a bar graph in 5-minute intervals.
Another cool feature is Touch Tracer from the Prius. The two control pads on the (flat bottom) steering wheel are touch sensitive, and when you press them, a duplicate image appears on the instrument panel. On the options list is UMWT’s DVD-AVN system – it’s a 2-DIN audio unit with 6.1-inch colour touchscreen, navigation system and reverse camera. It costs RM2,990.

The Prius c is richly equipped for the price. Besides the above mentioned unique features, standard kit includes seven airbags (front, side, curtain, driver’s knee), TRC (traction control), VSC (vehicle stability control), ABS, EBD, Brake Assist, auto climate control, cruise control and keyless entry with start button.
Five colours are available – pearl white, silver, black, citrus orange and red – the latter two were shown at the launch. The red car you see in our gallery comes with a full original Toyota bodykit, “blacked out” mouth and 16-inch wheels. These add ons are not available yet, but will be soon.

Once again, the Prius c is priced at RM97,000 on the road including insurance. The waiting list currently stands at “two to three months” according to UMWT.

Nissan Teana in Malaysia

If you sat in or driven a Nissan Sylphy, you'll notice the silky smooth ride it has from a smooth performing engine and XTRONIC CVT gearbox. The ride I had in the Sylphy was relaxing and comfortable, thanks to the thickly padded seats (and home sofa-inspired rear bench!), good refinement and suspension that absorb most of the road undulations.

Since Sylphy is a C-Segment sedan, it has a D-segment elder brother named Teana. I'm sure you guys remember Cefiro, right? Well, Teana is the successor of Cefiro and after a short hiatus, the latest generation is here to gain back a spot in the D-segment along with popular models like Toyota Camry and Honda Accord. If Sylphy is a silky smooth car, then you can expect the Teana to be silky smoother!



The all-new Teana looks appealing in the eyes... of some middle income or in the 30s and 40s men. Don't get me wrong, the Teana doesn't look obsolote and atrocious, but still it won't appeal to people who are younger than 30, no matter what kind of bodykit or funky paintjob you fix on it will change their mind. You will only find those wearing t-shirt with family in the car heading to shopping mall in the weekend, or wearing formal with a coat to a meeting, or even retired man driving around town with his wife owns a Nissan Teana.


With a width of 1795mm, the Teana is a tad smaller in terms of exterior dimension compared to Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Worse, the taillights design doesn't help in create a wide stance from the back at all, but it shines brilliantly and brightly with its LEDs.

The Teana comes with three engine choices: an entry level 2.0litre MR20DE engine which is found in Sylphy with 136bhp, a 2.5litre VQ V6 engine with 182bhp and the range topping 3.5litre, 252bhp V6 engine. The one I drove was the mid-range 2.5litre, which is not bad at all...



Step inside the 2.5litre Teana and you'll noticed how inviting the cabin is! Beige, comfy leather seats, luxurious looking dashboard and ample space for the front and rear passenger. The wood trim doesn't look fake and goes along well with the beige leather. No need to mention that the Teana's cabin felt that it is built to last, like every other Nissan models.

You'll be able to start the car by pressing the push-start button without taking out your key fob from your pocket. After a quick and minor vibration while firing up the engine, the engine goes into total silence while idle. You won't be able to tell that the engine is running or not if you had your eyes closed.



The Teana is surprisingly easy to drive, thanks to its light steering which enabled me to manoeuver out of the parking lot easily, despite its huge size. However, this is not a good thing while your travelling speed increase. The steering doesn't weigh up enough to provide an enjoyable manoeuvrability in high speed.

The award winning powerplant, on the other hand, performed excellently. Powerful but without harshness. Nissan did a great job in the NVH department too, filtering out unwanted noises from the cabin wonderfully. This is a car where your kids at the back will sleep soundly and will not ask you the "Are we there yet?" question frequently. The only thing I noticed was the suspension setup, which was a little on the firm side. But then, the Teana still absorb bumps without much intrusion into the cabin.

I was flabbergasted with the composure of the Teana on the road. My initial thought was a floaty and wobbly ride, but I was wrong. It handles nicely through bends and absorb bumps without unsettling the ride, as I've mentioned previously.

All-New Optima K5

 From its auto-leveling HID xenon headlamps and LED-Daytime Running lights at the front to its dynamic and sporty profile to the LED rear combination lamps, the All-New Optima K5 has been labelled one of Kia’s most stunningly designed vehicles.


Through its 18-inch alloy wheels, side garnish, chrome door handles, gull-wing folding side mirrors and lowered stance, the All-New Optima K5 exudes both a sporty and elegant appeal.





Inside, the All-New Optima K5 features a plush leather interior, a high-tech and luxurious supervision cluster and a multifunctional steering with controls for audio, ECO-driving, Auto Cruise-Control and Bluetooth.
 For the driver, the All-New Optima K5 is fitted with an 8-way electronically controlled seat with an integrated memory seat function which retains settings for two drivers based on their seating position.

Adding the overall ambience inside the All-New Optima K5 is a panoramic sun roof that is retractable in the front, an Infinity audio system connected to 8-speakers, a six-CD changer, AUX, iPod and USB connectivity and a dual-zone air-conditioner.


Other technological features in the car includes push-start ignition, auto-headlights, auto-wipers, a rear view camera display on the rear view mirror while the supervision cluster displays useful information such as engine oil service reminder, tire rotation service reminder, distance to service, fuel economy and steering wheel alignment.


Underneath the hood, the All-New Optima K5 is equipped with a fuel efficient Theta II 2.0 dual CVVT engine that produces 165 PS and 198 Nm of torque that is fitted to a six-speed automatic transmission that can be manually controlled through steering-mounted paddle-shifters.


The fuel consumption of the All-New Optima K5 on a combined cycle is 7.6-litres per 100 km.


The All-New Optima K5 also features an ECO control that optimises the drive train operation for the best fuel consumption.


Once engaged, the ECO control optimally adjusts the ECU, transmission and air-conditioner compressor to reduce the All-New Optima K5’s fuel consumption by 9.1%.


The drivability of the All-New Optima K5 is further enhanced through the use of a High Performance Damper (H.P.D) system at its suspension to deliver more responsive and proportionate damping action on both smooth and rough driving surfaces. This in turn results in improved riding comfort, efficient steering and enhanced handling.


The aerodynamics of the All-New Optima K5 receives a boost from its low ground clearance, front bumper lip and wheel deflectors that are aligned with the vehicle’s sleek profile to produce a coefficient drag of 0.29.


For safety, the vehicle comes with an Electronic Stability Program comprising of EBD, ABS, Traction Control System, Brake Assist System, Hill-start Assist Control, six-airbags, large brake discs for improved braking performance, front active headrests, child seat fixtures at the rear and a speed-sensing auto door locks.


The All-New Optima K5 has an on-the-road price of RM143,888.

New Perodua Alza SR – entry level variant from RM53k


Perodua has introduced a new variant of its MPV called Alza SR. SR stands for “Smart Ride” and this is an entry level variant positioned below the Standard and Advanced spec. It is available for viewing and booking at all 178 Perodua showrooms nationwide now.
Selling for between RM53,013.50 and RM56,513.50 on-the-road with insurance in Peninsular Malaysia, the new variant, available in BX Manual and BZ Auto spec, is Myvi SE priced. Previously, the cheapest Alza was the Alza GX Manual at 55,503.50, so this new one lowers the entry price by about RM2,500.

“The introduction of the Alza SR variant will make it even more affordable for Malaysian consumers looking to upgrade to a more spacious vehicle. Our customers like the versatility and functionality that Alza offers and do not mind having less features available compared with the standard and other variants. However, it does not mean we have compromised on the safety and the aesthetics of the Alza SR,” Perodua MD Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said.
Under the hood, nothing has changed, but what’s the difference is spec? The Alza SR makes do with “UV protected glass” on the windscreen only, as opposed to on all glass panels, and there’s no rear wiper. The wing mirrors are manually operated. Fog lamps, airbags, ABS, EBD and BA are unavailable, but that’s the case for the 1.5 SX and EZ as well, so it’s expected.

Note that in the Alza SR automatic, the parking brake has been moved to between the front seats (it’s foot operated in other auto Alzas), and the front seats are separated, not bench style. For the manual variant, there’s no change in layout.
The Alza SR comes in three colours: Glittering Silver, Ivory White and a new hue, Mystical Purple. Perodua targets to sell about 400 units of the Alza SR monthly, which will take up around 13% of Alza’s monthly sales.

Proton Exora Bold 1.6 Premium CVT menepis kritikan, enjin CFE kini lebih berkuasa!

Proton Holdings Berhad telah melangkah setapak lagi dalam memberikan produk dengan nilai belian terbaik kepada para pelanggannya. Itu yang aku rasakan apabila model terbaru Proton Exora Bold 1.6 Premium CVT telah dilancarkan pada tarikh 16 Disember 2011 (Jumaat) yang lepas. Turut dilancarkan pada hari tersebut ialah varian premium tertinggi iaitu Proton Exora Prime 1.6 Premium yang mempunyai beberapa perbezaan spesifikasi berbanding Exora Bold 1.6 Premium, termasuklah pengenalan varian Exora Bold 1.6 Manual dan Automatik 4AT. Untuk makluman, Proton Exora Bold mahu pun Prime bukanlah sebuah model yang dibangunkan baharu sepenuhnya, tetapi merupakan model naik taraf (facelift). Proton juga masih menjual Proton Exora 1.6 Standard Manual dengan ciri-ciri asas dan harga yang lebih rendah.
Antara yang paling menarik perhatian dan mengujakan semua pihak ialah berkenaan pengenalan enjin generasi terbaru CFE (Charge Fuel Efficiency) untuk varian Bold 1.6 Premium CVT dan Prime, dibina berasaskan enjin CamPr0 CPS pada model Exora sebelumnya namun dibantu sistem turbo yang buat pertama kali diperkenalkan dengan kuasa yang cukup agresif. Berbanding kuasa 125hp dan 150Nm tork maksimum pada model terdahulu yang dikatakan kurang berkuasa dan sering menerima kritikan, enjin CamPro CFE kini menghamburkan kuasa kuda setinggi 138hp@5,000rpm dan tork maksimum meningkat dengan ketara kepada angka 205Nm pada putaran enjin bermula serendah 2,000rpm.
Dengan kuasa yang cukup membanggakan itu, tidak syak lagi Proton Exora Bold 1.6 Premium kini tidak lagi menghadapi masalah kekurangan kuasa untuk bergerak dari sifar ke 100 km, apatah lagi untuk melakukan pecutan pantas di atas lebuh raya, atau ketika terperangkap dalam kesesakan jalan raya di dalam bandar. Bukan itu saja, enjin CFE yang mampu memecut dari 0-100km/j dalam tempoh 11.3 saat itu juga dilengkapi sistem transmisi yang boleh dikatakan antara yang termaju di dunia. Proton Exora Bold 1.6 Premium didatangkan standard transmisi dari jenis CVT dengan 6-kelajuan, memberikan pecutan lancar dan bertenaga, seterusnya mampu menjimatkan penggunaan petrol melalui kepintaran pemilihan nisbah gear yang tepat sewaktu pemanduan.
Beralih ke bahagian luaran, Proton Exora Bold 1.6 Premium kini tampil lebih bergaya dengan perubahan melibatkan bahagian bampar dan jeriji depan, termasuk perubahan di bahagian belakang yang melibatkan bampar dan lampu combi. Bagi aku sendiri, rupa wajah Proton Exora Bold 1.6 Premium jika dilihat secara keseluruhannya begitu menarik berbanding generasi Exora terdahulu. Exora Bold 1.6 Premium kelihatan lebih garang dan sporty, juga kelihatan lebih mewah. Lampu depan dengan perumah dalaman yang dihitamkan, termasuklah lampu combi belakang yang kini menerima kesan khas ‘smoked’, menjadikan penampilan Exora Bold kelihatan begitu kemas dan bergaya. Tidak dilupakan perubahan rim aloi dari 15 inci kepada 16 inci, menjadikan penampilan Exora Bold 1.6 Premium lebih gagah dan mantap di atas jalan raya.
Melihat ke bahagian dalaman Exora Bold 1.6 Premium, kemasan yang dikenakan terhadap model itu juga berada pada tahap yang cukup memuaskan. Kesemua tempat duduk menerima balutan kulit yang kelihatan begitu elegan melalui penggunaan dua tona warna, termasuk kemasan baharu di bahagian panel pintu yang menampakkan ciri lebih mewah. Roda stereng juga kini diperkemaskan dengan balutan kulit untuk pegangan yang lebih selesa dan lebih rasa kemewahan. Bahagian papan pemuka tetap kelihatan kemas walaupun masih mengekalkan rekabentuk yang lama. Antara ciri terbaru di bahagian dalaman ialah pengenalan skrin monitor kecil di cermin pandang belakang yang membantu pemandu untuk mengundurkan kenderaan, melalui sistem berkamera yang dipasang di bahagian pintu bonet belakang.
Antara ciri-ciri terbaru lain yang melengkapi Exora Bold 1.6 Premium ialah cermin sisi boleh lipat eletrik. Dengan hanya satu sentuhan butang, cermin sisi tersebut boleh dilipat masuk ke dalam, memudahkan pemandu jika memerlukan sewaktu meletak kenderaan di ruang parkir yang sempit. Paparan monitor mudah alih sistem navigasi GPS juga disediakan untuk varian Bold Premium untuk lebih kemudahan ketika memandu ke sesuatu destinasi. Tidak dilupakan ciri-ciri keselamatan yang amat diperlukan untuk sebuah MPV berkuasa turbo ini. Proton Exora Bold 1.6 Premium kini dilengkapi brek cakera di ke semua bahagian roda, lengkap dengan sistem ABS dan EBD. Sistem ‘ Lotus Ride & Handling’ yang menjadi kebanggaan Proton memberi nilai tambah untuk model MPV berkuasa dan tangkas ini, menjadikan pemanduan dan pengendaliannya begitu menyeronokkan, namun kekal lebih selamat.
Berkenaan harga, mungkin ada yang kurang bersetuju apabila harga untuk Exora Bold 1.6 Premium dengan enjin CFE dan transmisi CVT ini mencecah hampir RM80K, namun bagi aku dengan pelbagai ciri menarik yang ditawarkan, inilah belian terbaik di kalangan MPV dari pelbagai jenama yang berada di pasaran ketika ini. Harga tentatif OTR (on the road) yang dikemukakan oleh Proton ketika ini ialah sebanyak RM79,998.00, namun ada pendapat yang mengatakan harga ini mungkin akan dikurangkan apabila Proton menyemaknya semula pada bulan Januari 2012 depan. Bagi yang berminat untuk memiliki sebuah MPV untuk kegunaan keluarga, Proton Exora Bold 1.6 Premium bagi aku sudah melebihi keperluan setiap individu. Tempahan dan pandu uji sudah boleh dibuat di semua pusat edaran Proton Edar, namun pendaftaran hanya akan dilakukan pada minggu kedua Januari depan.
